Smog : How Can We Solve This Major Air Pollution | 2024

Smog is a type of air pollution which is extremely harmful for Humans and Environment. It is created when sunlight reacts with vehicles emissions and Industrial Gases. It forms a thick haze, often in urban areas causing low visibility and health concerns such as breathing difficulties and eye irritation.

What Is Smog :

Smog is a type of air pollution which happens when sunlight interacts with pollutants such as Nitrogen oxides and Organic compounds. The sources of these pollutants are vehicles emissions. industry emissions and burning of fossil fuels. The sunlight triggers a reaction between them creating a ground-level ozone layer. Smog is now becoming a worldwide discuss topic as it is affecting many people around the world. Smog has some significant impacts on human's in which most of them are related to Respiratory System issue's Such As: Irritations in eye and throat, Asthma And Bronchitis.

Smog is a air pollution which is extremely harmful for Humans and Environment. It is formed when sunlight reacts with pollution in air.

Types Of Smog's :

Their are primary two type's of smog's :

  • Photochemical Smog : It is formed when sunlight reacts with pollutant's such as nitrogen oxides and organic compound's. Mainly formed from vehicles emissions and industrial gases. It creates ground level ozone and brown haze. It is more common in summer, warm seasons heavily populated and high traffic levels cities.

  • Sulfurous Smog : It is formed when (sulfur) formed from burning of fossil fuels such as coal. It combines with moisture and particle matter in air. It results in thick haze that's high in sulfur compounds. it forms consistent where the coal burning is prevalent.

What Are Smog-Monitoring Device's :

Smog monitoring devices are the devices which we can use to detect smog in cities. Smog monitoring devices can measure air quality and various pollutants that cause to form smog. One most common type to measure smog are air quality monitors which can measure amount of air pollutants in air as it can measure nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide Etc. These devices can provide real-time data and helps communities understanding pollution levels and necessary actions to take. Nowadays, many people use smartphone apps which tells them about their current area AQI (Air Quality Index) allowing them to monitor and taking precautions before going out.

Usage Of Catalytic Converter's :

Due to rising air pollution concerns All manufacture's of car's decided to roll out their cars with catalytic converters to reduce contaminants coming from their car's exhaust. As many European and American countries have make their auto policies strict regarding car tailpipe gases. Catalytic Converter's convert harmful gases coming from car engine's into less harmful gases such as Carbon Monoxide, Hydrocarbons and Nitrogen Oxides Into Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen and Water Vapor before releasing them into open-environment. Catalytic converter's are made from rare earth metals such as platinum. palladium and rhodium. Catalytic converters are seen as a significant source for minimizing air pollution from vehicles which is a significant source for smog and greenhouse gases.

Air Purification System's :

Air purification systems are the systems that filter out harmful contaminants from outdoor and indoor air improving air quality by removing harmful pollutants such as smoke, pollen, dust and harmful gases. Air purification systems are widely used in home, office , hospitals, Etc. Air purification systems like HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) are mostly used homes because they filter out 99.97% of small particles, allergens making them suitable for family use's. Another option is of Smart Air Purifiers which allows the user to monitor and adjust the settings of air quality as per their needs. Air purifiers are used when someone is living in a highly polluted area. These purifiers lower's down's the chance's of respiratory diseases and a environment of fresh air.

CFC And HCFC Gases Impact On Environment :

CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon's) And HCFC (Hydrochlorofluorocarbon's) are synthetic gases once widely used in refrigerators , Air conditioning and Foam production due to their stability and non-flammability. However, they have some bad negative effects on environment. Two Major Impacts are being discussed :

  •  Ozone Layer Depletion : Cfc And Hcfc releases chlorine and bromine atoms which reach upper atmosphere and are broken down by ultraviolet radiation (UV). These then react with ozone which leads to depletion of ozone. This results in thinning of ozone layer which allows more ultraviolent light into earth which is more dangerous to humans as well as earth ecosystems.
  •  Global Warning : Cfc And Hcfc are both greenhouse gases. Because they have low concentrations in atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Their ability to trap heat is thousands of times stronger when compared to other gases.

Is Planting Trees A Way To Battle :

Planting Trees is a good way to tackle environmental pollutions such as climate change, Air pollution,Etc. Through the process of photosynthesis plants take Co2 and convert into O2. Moreover trees have a lot more than conversion they filter-out harmful substances from air such as sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.improving local- air quality and reducing impacts of smog. As they absorb Co2 and convert into O2. Trees can be a source of healthy air quality, cool breeze's and provide shade. So, we should all believe in planting of tees not on cutting them down everyday.

Are Electric Vehicles Doing Their Work :

As, we knew that in oncoming next year's we will see Electric vehicles (EV'S) replacing our normal gasoline/diesel/petrol engines because of environmental harm they do. Many european countries have decided to do their respective countries fully electric to reduce the harms on environmental. Electric vehicles reduce the air pollution by highest margins when compared to traditional gasoline cars. Ev's offer emission-free travel as the technology advances the batteries used in Ev's are also becoming Range topper and reducing charging times. On the other hand, engineers are finding other possible ways to make a Electric Battery as electric battery is made from rare earth metals such as : lithium, cobalt and nickel. But Ev's are far from environment friendly than fossil fuel powered cars.

Low Emitting-Stove's And Heater's :

Low emitting stoves and heaters are eco-friendly alternatives that provide necessary warmth while reducing harmful emissions such as :Carbon monoxide, Organic compounds and particulate matter. Usage of these appliances allows improves indoor air quality, promote healthy living spaces and reduces the environmental impact done by traditional heating methods. On the other hand, people burn woods in winter's to keep them safe from cold air blows but it puts a negative effect on environment. Electric Heaters are the solution to this as they offer zero-emissions. they don't produce any by-product when use making them best for environment.

Conclusion's :

In final conclusion of this article we have concluded that smog is a complex and harmful form of air pollution and has significant impact both on environment and living species. It is primarily formed because of vehicle , industry emissions and weather conditions. Smog can lead to many respiratory issue's, Heart problems and eye-irritation.We all can fight back smog if we plant trees, adopting cleaner technologies, reducing vehicles emissions and using renewable energies at their most potential.
